How We Protect You

  • Unauthorized Transactions

    Unauthorized Transactions

    Guarding your banking credentials
Reminder: BMO Harris will never contact you by unsolicited phone call or in an email to ask for your User ID, Password, PIN, social security number or other sensitive information. If you suspect you have been a victim of fraud or would like to report suspicious activity, visit the "Report Fraud & Suspicious Activity" section of this site for important information. Visit your branch or contact us using a known legitimate number (for example, the number on the back of your debit card).
We work hard to protect your confidential information and privacy online. At BMO Harris, information security is one of our highest priorities. We use the latest technologies and other software to prevent unauthorized users from accessing our systems.
A secure login process and strong encryption are only the first steps in helping to prevent anyone from accessing your account information online. Below are key details around what we do to help contribute to our mutual online security.
Unauthorized Transactions and Our Online Guarantees1-- Personal Accounts
    (Under Regulation E)
If you are a consumer customer and use online banking or bill pay, you can rest easy as we offer consumers some of the strongest protections available. As evidence of our commitment to providing a secure and dependable online banking environment, our Online Guarantees* include:
    • Protection from unauthorized transactions
    • Bill payment guarantee
To learn more about our Online Guarantees, visit the "Online Guarantee" section of this site. Additional measures that we take to help you bank online with confidence include the following:
    • Provide secure log-in access to your BMO Harris online accounts directly from the BMO Harris home page.
    • Use strong encryption technology to help ensure that data passing between your computer and our web server is secure, therefore you must have a browser that supports this level of encryption (in technical jargon: 128 bit minimum encryption).
    • Require session time-outs after 10 minutes of inactivity.
    • Use of secured firewalls, to protect your account information.
    • We never send unsolicited messages asking you to provide us with personal or account information via email.
Also note, that all debit card holders gain valuable protection if your debit card is lost or stolen with the Mastercard® Worldwide Zero Liability2 protection when reported promptly. To learn more, view our account disclosures PDF (PDF, 439KB).
If you believe there to be an unauthorized transaction or you have questions about your electronic transfers or card transactions, contact us IMMEDIATELY.
1The BMO Harris Online Guarantee applies to transactions involving your BMO Harris deposits and BMO Harris loans, including any BMO Harris credit card or line of credit. If you conduct transactions through affiliated or unaffiliated web sites or involving products or services other than deposit and loans offered by BMO Harris, such transactions, products and services are not covered by the Online Guarantee.
2The Mastercard® Worldwide Zero Liability protection protects eligible cardholders from certain unauthorized transactions processed over the MasterCard network. Subject to certain restrictions and limitations that may be imposed by MasterCard from time to time. Please refer to http://www.mastercard.us/zero-liability.html for further information regarding MasterCard's Zero Liability protection.

  • Online Guarantees for Personal Accounts - Frequently Asked Questions

Online Guarantees for Personal Accounts - Frequently Asked Questions (Revised 10/9/12)

Does BMO Harris Bank offer Online Guarantees for personal banking accounts?

Yes, our Online Guarantees for personal accounts ensure you will not be liable in the unlikely event that funds are removed from your account without your authorization as the result of an online banking or bill pay transaction, and guarantee accurate, on-time payment of properly scheduled bill payments1.

What do the BMO Harris Online Guarantees cover?

The BMO Harris Online Guarantees1 include both an online banking and a bill pay component that cover the following:
    • Online Banking Guarantee1 - you will not be responsible for unauthorized online transfers from your BMO Harris personal accounts.
    • Bill Pay Service Guarantee1 - if we fail to process a properly scheduled online bill payment in accordance with your instructions, we will reimburse any late charges assessed by the biller.

Are there any limits to what will be refunded under the Online Guarantees?

The Online Banking Guarantee1 ensures that we will refund the amount that is fraudulently taken from your account by a third party. We cannot be held responsible for any other losses you may incur as a result of the fraudulent activity. You must notify us within two Business Days of discovery of the fraudulent transaction.
With the Bill Pay Service Guarantee1, we will bear responsibility for any late payment related charges, should a payment post after its due date, as long as the payment was properly scheduled according to the guidelines described under the "Bill Pay Service Guarantee" section in the BMO Harris Online BankingSM Services Agreement. You must notify us of the late payment within two Business Days of your discovery of the late payment.

What happens if I close a BMO Harris account that is used for bill pay?

Closing the primary account associated with bill pay, even if there are other deposit accounts linked to bill pay, will result in a loss of bill pay access, including the loss of all biller information, activity history and pending transactions for all accounts.
Once the primary deposit account becomes inactive, BMO Harris cannot track or monitor transactions and the Online Guarantees no longer apply.
Before closing the primary account associated with bill pay, please call a Contact Center Banker at 1-888-340-2265 to verify the status of pending bill pay transactions that are covered by the Online Guarantees.

  • Secure Login and Online Banking Security

Secure Login and Online Banking Security*

At BMO Harris Bank, we're committed to your security. We want you to feel safe and confident knowing your identity and account information is protected.
Providing secure login is an online security feature that helps protect you against identity theft and fraud.
    • Secure login lets you know you are at the valid web site
    • It's free for your protection when you access your BMO Harris accounts
    • Setting up secure login is just 3 easy steps and takes minutes to complete
    • Your User ID and Password will remain the same
For additional assistance, please contact us directly at 1-888-340-2265.
Secure login helps protect your online banking account from identity theft and fraud in two ways.
    • First, it helps you recognize that you are at the valid web site and not a fraudulent site. We display your picture and personal phrase each time you sign on so you know it is safe to enter personal information.
    • Secondly, secure login provides us additional verification to ensure that it is really you accessing your account information.

    Confirmation Questions

Secure login will allow us to recognize computers/mobile you commonly use. If we don't recognize the computer/mobile device you sign on from, we will take additional steps to verify your identity by asking you to answer confirmation questions.
During the setup process, you will be asked to select confirmation questions.
    • You will choose three confirmation questions that are unique to you
    • Choose questions and answers that you will easily remember
    • We will display two of your three questions only if we don't recognize your computer/mobile device.
    • For your protection, these questions are selected at random from the ones you have selected.

    Register a Computer or Phone

During the setup process, we will ask you if you'd like to register your computer/mobile device. We suggest that you register computers/mobile devices you commonly use.
Computers/mobile devices are registered using a cookie. A cookie is a small, secure text file that BMO Harris saves to your browser. Each time you sign on from that computer/mobile device, we will recognize the cookie and match it with your BMO Harris Online Banking User ID to verify your identity. If you sign on from a computer/mobile device that is not registered, you will be asked to answer your confirmation questions for additional verification.
    • You may register more than one computer/mobile device
    • We recommend you don't register public computers, such as those located in libraries, airports or coffee shops
    • If you have multiple users on one computer/mobile device, each user may register the computer/mobile device
    • If you use multiple browsers, such as Internet Explorer and Firefox, you will need to register each browser individually
    • If your Internet browser doesn't allow permanent cookies, you can change your cookie settings using the instructions provided in the Internet browser's help file

    Online Banking Security

In addition to providing secure login access to your online accounts directly from the BMO Harris home page, we also offer:
    • Strong encryption technology to help ensure that data passing between your computer/mobile device and our web server is secure
    • Session time-outs after 10 minutes of inactivity
    • Secured firewalls
We do what we can to provide you with a safe and secure online environment, but we also need you to take the appropriate measures to secure your personal computing environment. It's important to consider that many public access computers may have malware.
Malicious software (malware) is designed to break into or damage a computer system and can be installed on your computer without your consent. Malware is very common on the Internet and typically spreads through links on infected websites, instant messaging programs and email. Beware of offers for "free email virus protection" or a "no cost Internet accelerator" or other such enticements or you may end up inadvertently revealing personal or financial information.
In many cases, malware will monitor your Internet activity including everything you type on your computer -- your card numbers, account numbers and Passwords as well as the personal and confidential information you provide when you use otherwise secure online applications (e.g. loan applications, mortgage applications and online account opening applications).
In some cases, you may be able to detect malware on your computer because of unusual computer behaviors like slow response time, programs opening/closing on their own or numerous pop-ups while using the Internet. Most of the time, however, malware will be virtually undetectable. Your best defense against malware is to install anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software on your computer and keep these programs up-to-date.
    * Secure login procedures do not apply to BMO Harris Online BankingSM for Small Business or BMO Harris Invest Online. These systems utilize SecurID tokens and Trusteer.
